REPORTS: Data Statistics

School Statistics Monitoring Committee

This group meets annually.  The meeting for this year is still to be called. It is expected to happen late Term 2 or early Term 3.

Report from 2009
ENROL
The upload from ENROL on the whole went really well for the March return.  The only real problem was that some schools didn’t upload on the 2nd March and this has made some follow up calls from the MoE have had to be made.  ENROL uploading has meant that the paper forms were shorter as some reports came directly from the ENROL system.  A comparison between ENROL stats and paper forms showed the MoE that ENROL was very accurate and this accuracy was actually more than they expected.

Another change to the returns is that the Board Chairperson is no longer required to sign the paper returns off.

The input of national student numbers in student management systems and ENROL has meant great accuracy on school leaver tables.   As well as collecting leaver tables electronically data on international students also went to the MoE via this method.

All students now have an NS number.  Some concern was expressed at the security around the national student number and what will be done with data once it is collected.

ENROL is only for authorised users and it is important that schools do not give out log ins and passwords to unauthorised people.  It must NOT be used to track someone down eg in a matrimonial dispute case or for any commercial purposes whatsoever.  Monitoring in the background by the MoE will hopefully track any abuse of the system.

The July returns will not be using this electronic method of gathering data however some behind the scenes work in comparing the paper copy with ENROL will be done to gauge accuracy.

The .MOE file will remain important and will need to be sent off via the SMS or the Leadspace portal.

Youth Guarantee Scheme – this new scheme is still very much on the drawing board but it will enable students up to the age of 18 to enrol with tertiary providers to complete their NCEA Levels 1-3.  How these courses will be funded is still under question but the idea is that students who for some reason or another missed out completing NCEA through the school system will get another shot at it via a tertiary provider.

Website – www.educationcounts.govt.nz
This is a great website to draw down all sorts of statistics relating to education.  It also hosts various publications.   It is well worth a look at.

Attendance Survey – Schools will have received an attendance survey.  This is a sample of a week in school for about 1280 schools.
